Although they don’t serve ‘tapas’ (miniature plate) they serve ‘raciones’ (=double tapa portion) which is about the size of a small plate. The idea is to order as many dishes as you like. There are no starters or main courses and you can merrily order your way through the menu.
Las Gitanillas is situated between two narrow streets (Calle Caridad & Calle Málaga) on two levels. The upper level, accessed by calle Caridad, has high-rise chairs and tables as well as a TV and looks more like a snack bar. The lower level is basically the restaurant and is accessed by large blue garage doors, which are kept open all year turning it into a patio. In winter they have gas heaters to keep you warm if you are lucky enough to sit close to one. The patio has a plexi glass roof, which is opened in summer exposing the blue skies. Geraniums hang from pots on the walls and together with the fluorescent light gives the place a delightful Spanish feeling. Cristóbal, the chef offers almost every kind of dish you can think of when thinking of tapas. Just a few of the ‘do try’s: Our recommendations: Ensalada malagueña Potato salad with oranges and fish Berenjenas con miel de caña. Fried aubergine slices with sugar cane syrup Bien me Sabe Cod marinated in vinegar & deep fried Almejas a la Gitanilla Small Mussels in garlic Mero Fried local white fish Pollo que cacareaba a la plancha Juicy chicken Carne en salsa Gitanilla Pork in a yummy garlic tomatoe sauce Croquetas caseras just try them…… Paco (the owner of RestaurantePaula) owns this restaurant too and consequently only the freshest of fish are offered on the menu. The prices are low, the quality high, the ambience Spanish. What more could you want? Oh, a good rosè? Of course…
