Many excellent tapas bars are found in the most obscure places; back alleys, petrol stations and industrial zones. It stands to reason that the Spanish worker knows where to get the best food during his lunch break which is invariably at least 2 hours long. This can definitely be said for El Camino. It lies on the road leading up to the 'poligono' (industrial zone) in Estepona.
This tapas bar is definitely one of the best. You'll be hungry when you arrive so order the 'pinchos de gambas' first. These shrimps on a skewer are just delish - you need at least 2 per person and are served quickly. You can then move on to order anything Antonio has got on display. All fish are fried on a huge skillet with a minimum of olive oil and sea salt. His 'pulpo a la gallega' - warm squid on a wooden board with a sprinkling of olive oil, sea salt and paprika - is to die for. If you like scallops, then order the 'peregrinas'. They come served in their shell with a tasty marinade. If you want meat, then ask for a 'montadito' a small bun, heated on the skillet with a piece of marinated pork inside. Great accompaniment are the tomatoes, just cut in slices and served with olive oil and sea salt. Simple and tasty. You won't find a menu in El Camino, the waiter will just reel off whatever is on order, so take your dictionary or just go inside, look at the displays and point out to him, what you would like to eat. The drinks available are basic and Antonio doesn't have rosé wine on offer, nor sparkling water. But believe you me this is no hindrance to a truly wonderful evening. One more word - DELICIOUS !!!
