Restaurant El Mero is situated on the upper floor of the Benalmadena marina promenade. This large, elegant restaurant has a distinct marine flair to it and belongs to one of the best fish restaurants on the Coast. Fresh fish and seafood are laid out in a glass showcase which is an integral part of the long bar, so that you can point to what you would like to eat if you don’t know the Spanish word. There are three dining areas. One being the outside veranda overlooking the port. There is also a separate room for private events. The service is friendly and competent and Toni, our waiter for the evening, recommended the restaurants signature dishes giving us a well selected choice. Complimentary olives and bread are provided with either butter or a delicious green olive oil. We started with the Coquinas (cockles). We’ve had this dish many times in very many restaurants but these were the best ever. The Ensalada Templada was a warm salad with prawns, Serrano ham, blue cheese and chicory. A very different but delicious "warm" salad. Pulpo Gallega (Octopus Galician Style) is another dish that always varies from restaurant to restaurant. In El Mero the tender octopus is not served on potatoes but on its own on a wooden plate with a sprinkling of oil and sea salt. A real typical Malaganian dish is the Fritura Mixta. This consists of a large choice of local fish and seafood, deep-fried in a light coating of flour. We had squid rings, whitebait, anchovies, small red mullet and pickled cod filets. Sumptuous. Moving on to the main dishes we started with a Lubina a la Espalda ( Sea bass ). This is a whole fish, removed from the bone and oven sautéed in wine. Served with fresh mushrooms, potatoes and tomatoes and a olive oil/vinegar sauce with sliced garlic and small chillies. The oil-vinegar mix was ideal for this perfectly fried fish. Our meat course was an Entrecôte served with a baked potato with a light garlic mayonnaise and fried vegetables. The meat was succulent, grilled to perfection and the buttery pepper sauce on the side was great. We were so sated as you can well imagine but we just had to try at least one of the desserts, which are all home made! We took another typical Spanish speciality – Crème Caramel – and once again were knocked out by the yummy creamy taste of this fluffy dessert. As we all drink different wines, we ordered by the glass. The waiter serves the respective wines from the bottle at the table so you know exactly which wine you’re getting. Beer and dry sherry are served in frozen glasses and the coffee is served the old fashioned Spanish way i.e. a portion of coffee in the cup and topped up with hot milk from a jug by the waiter at the table. The food quality in El Mero is exceptional and it is a restaurant we recommend wholeheartedly to fish-, seafood - and meat lovers alike.
