Located on the first floor of the Paseo in Benalmadena port, Ruby’s is a restaurant more than well worth visiting. The décor is subtle with beautiful pictures of Indian Gods and animals on the walls. As all restaurants on the Paseo it is divided into two parts, separated by the walkway. The enclosed balcony affords a wonderful view over the harbour by day and night. The food is Indian and Mexican. One might think that offering two different kinds of cuisine could lead to neither being good but nothing could be further from the truth! It makes no difference what you order, it’s all excellent. Our extremely friendly and competent waiter, Monty advised us with expertise and helped us choose various dishes to give us an overview of the kitchens culinary delights. The Salty Lassie came in a ½ pint jug, frothy, cold and just the right amount of salt. The house wines are Spanish and good value for money. We started with Prawn Purée served on warm paratha bread. It consisted of several prawns coated in a juicy curried purée. This was followed by a Mixed Tandoori Grill. Succulent pieces of chicken, lamb and beef sizzling on the hot plate surrounded by onions and peppers. Our main Indian course was Lamb Phal . We ordered it hot and it certainly was. But it was wonderful. Monty bought us a bowl of Raita just in case we needed to cool our palates. Instead of rice we had a Garlic Nan, a Keema Nan and a Peshwari Nan. All were freshly made, hot and moist and excellent. The Mexican part of the menu for us consisted of Mexi Ribs and a Meat Burrito. The meat of the ribs fell off the bone and covered in a sweet n’ sour BBQ sauce. It was served with a small side salad and what we call ‘finger-lickingly-good’. Carly lived in New York for a long time and often ate Mexican food there but she claimed Ruby’s Burrito was the best she’d ever tasted! A large wrap filled with tender beef with melted cheese on top. The wrap had the right consistency (not dry like so often) and the beef was mixed with jalapeno peppers, onions and a spicy BBQ sauce. I was served with fresh creamy guacamole and a small side salad. The home madeKulfi was our dessert and we had both versions which are on the menu; the Mango Kulfi and the Pistachio Kulfi. Both completely different in taste and a perfect ending to a wonderful meal. Ruby’s offers delicious food, excellent service and a wonderful view of the harbour – perfect! Andalujo 2011
