Surrounded by palm trees and greenery, El Gamonal, named after a local flower, is a superb family run restaurant. In summer the dining takes place on the canapé shaded terrace. In its centre is a lovely fountain surrounded by plants and flowers. In winter, the restaurant serves as the dining area. It resembles an old farmhouse and even the windows look out onto a green country side with painted cows. Filled with warmth from the open fire place you feel right at home. The smoking area is separated from the main restaurant by stained glass windows and radiates the same warmth and friendliness. Antonio the owner and his staff are cheerful, attentive and provide an excellent service. Antonio's son, Francisco is the head chef and responsible for the high class Spanish cuisine. Whilst studying the menu you will be served raw carrot strips with a delicious blue cheese dip. You may be familiar with a lot of the dishes such as avocado with prawns or the stuffed peppers, but in El Gamonal they are a touch different. If you've never tried Spanish black sausage then this is the place to initiate yourself. The sausage is chopped, scrambled with egg and truly wonderful. All steak dishes are presented on a sizzling clay plate and then sliced in front of you. All vegetables are fresh and crisp, owing mostly to the fact that 80% of the vegetables and salads served are home grown! All desserts are home made and to die for. In case you cannot make up you mind ask for a selection, Antonio will be happy to oblige. If you are a chocoholic then the chocolate turnover with almonds is a must. There is no background music but you might experience the troubadour duet that make an appearance and play Spanish traditionals. The house wines are all excellent and your meal will be rounded off by a digestive on the house, usually a pacheran, or any other drink of your choice. Ladies, a thoughtful touch are the intimate toiletries and the small hand towels in the bathroom. Just one of the many personal thoughts that go into making El Gamonal a restaurant you will want to return to.
